Llewellyn Thomas

Llewellyn Thomas is an Associate Professor in Innovation & Entrepreneurship in the University of Sydney Business School. He concurrently holds a position as Visiting Professor at Imperial College Business School. Thomas earned his PhD from Imperial College Business School, an MBA with Distinction majoring in Finance & Strategy from Bayes Business School London, a Bachelor of Laws (Honours) majoring in Jurisprudence from the University of Sydney, and a Bachelor of Arts (Honours) majoring in economic geography from the University of Sydney. His prior appointments include Associate Professor at IESE Business School, Universidad de Navarra from 2020 to 2024, and at Ramon Llull University from 2017 to 2020. These roles reflect his extensive career trajectory in leading business schools focused on strategy, innovation, and entrepreneurship.

Thomas's research centers on coevolutionary processes that drive successful digital innovation, with emphasis on ecosystems, platform markets, entrepreneurial framing, generative AI, and organizational scaling. He has published in premier journals such as Academy of Management Review, Journal of Management, Journal of Management Studies, Entrepreneurship Theory and Practice, and Research Policy. Key works include "Architectural leverage: putting platforms in context" (Academy of Management Perspectives, 2014), "Distinguishing digitization and digitalization: A systematic review and conceptual framework" (Journal of Product Innovation Management, 2023), "Jagged competencies: Measuring the reliability of generative AI in academic research" (Journal of Business Research, 2026), "Project Ecosystems: Enabling Emergent Project Value" (Project Management Journal, 2025), and "Ecosystem framing and infomediary resonance: Amazon's early years (1995-2003)" (2025).
