Luis Gómez-Mejia served as the Ray and Milann Siegfried Professor of Management in the Mendoza College of Business at the University of Notre Dame within the Business & Economics faculty. He earned a Ph.D. in 1981, M.S. in 1974, and B.S. in 1971 from the University of Minnesota, as well as an A.S. in 1970 from Miami-Dade Junior College. Prior to joining Notre Dame in 2013, he held the Benton Cocanougher Chair in Business at Texas A&M University. Earlier in his career at Arizona State University, he was a Council of 100 Distinguished Scholar, Regents Professor, and Arizona Heritage Chair holder. Following his time at Notre Dame, he returned to Arizona State University as Regents Professor and Weatherup/Overby Chair of Management.
Gómez-Mejia's academic interests center on international management, family business, strategic management, and executive compensation. He has published more than 200 articles in the most prestigious management journals and written or edited over 15 books in these domains. He ranks as one of the 12 most published authors in the 'big eight' management journals out of approximately 20,000 Academy of Management members and was cited over 19,600 times as of 2016. Key works include 'Socioemotional wealth and business risks in family-controlled firms: Evidence from Spanish olive oil mills' (Gómez-Mejía et al., 2007, Administrative Science Quarterly), 'Socioemotional wealth in family firms: Theoretical dimensions, assessment approaches, and agenda for future research' (Berrone, Cruz, & Gómez-Mejia, 2012, Family Business Review), 'The bind that ties: Socioemotional wealth preservation in family firms' (Gómez-Mejia et al., 2011, Academy of Management Annals), 'A behavioral agency model of managerial risk taking' (Wiseman & Gómez-Mejia, 1998, Academy of Management Review), and 'Managing Human Resources' (Gómez-Mejia, Balkin, & Cardy, 1995). Named to the 2015 Thomson Reuters Highly Cited Researchers list for economics and business, he is a member of the Academy of Management Hall of Fame, has earned numerous research awards, served on the Academy of Management Board of Governors, as president of its Personnel/Human Resources Division, and as three-term president of the Iberoamerican Academy of Management.
