Luz E. Herrera serves as Professor of Law and Associate Dean for Experiential Education at Texas A&M University School of Law since September 2016. She holds a J.D. from Harvard Law School (1999) and an A.B. in Political Science from Stanford University (1995). Her career includes positions as Assistant Dean for Clinical Education, Experiential Learning, and Public Service at the University of California, Los Angeles School of Law (2014-2016); Visiting Clinical Professor at the University of California, Irvine School of Law (2013-2014); Assistant Professor at Thomas Jefferson School of Law (2008-2014); Visiting Professor at Chapman University School of Law (2007-2008); and Senior Clinical Fellow at Harvard Law School (2006-2007). Earlier, she was Principal of The Law Office of Luz E. Herrera (2001-2008) and Associate in the Real Estate Department at Heller Ehrman White & McAuliffe LLP (1999-2001).
Herrera's academic interests encompass community economic development, experiential education, clinical legal education, law firm incubators, professional responsibility, social justice, ethics, entrepreneurship, and community development with a focus on Latinos. Notable publications include "Training Lawyer-Entrepreneurs," Denver University Law Review (2011, 51 citations); "Rethinking Private Attorney Involvement through a Low Bono Lens," Loyola of Los Angeles Law Review (2009, 51 citations); "The Emerging Legal Architecture for Social Justice" (with Louise G. Trubek), NYU Review of Law & Social Change (2020); "The Network for Justice: Pursuing a Latinx Civil Rights Agenda" (with Pilar Margarita Hernández Escontrias), Harvard Latinx Law Review (2018); and "Challenging a Tradition of Exclusion: The History of an Unheard Story at Harvard Law School," Harvard Latino Law Review (2002). Among her awards are the Hispanic National Bar Foundation Academic Leadership Award (2015), Notre Dame Law School’s Graciela Olivarez Award (2014), ABA Journal's Top 25 Legal Rebels (2009), and Harvard Law School's Gary Bellow Public Service Award (2005). She co-directs the American Bar Foundation’s Network for Justice and has chaired the ABA Special Committee on Hispanic Legal Rights & Responsibilities.
