About Lyndal

Lyndal Trevena is Professor Emerita in the Faculty of Medicine and Health and Professor of Primary Health Care in the Sydney School of Public Health at the University of Sydney. She holds the qualifications MBBS (Hons), MPhilPH, and PhD. A general practitioner with 15 years of clinical practice prior to commencing her academic career in 2001, she co-leads the Discipline of General Practice and the NHMRC Centre for Research Excellence Ask, Share, Know: Rapid Evidence for General Practice Decisions. Trevena provides pro bono clinical services at the Asylum Seeker Centre NSW, with a special interest in health issues for vulnerable populations such as the homeless and asylum seekers.

Her research interests encompass primary health care, evidence-based medicine, shared decision making, risk communication, health literacy, and preventive healthcare implementation in high-resource settings in Australia, the UK, USA, Malaysia, and Canada, as well as low-resource settings in India and Timor-Leste. With over 240 peer-reviewed publications cited more than 15,000 times, key contributions include co-authoring the Cochrane review of patient decision aid trials, "A decision aid to support informed choices about bowel cancer screening among adults with low education: randomised controlled trial" (2013), and "Presenting quantitative information about decision outcomes: a risk communication primer for patient decision aid developers" (2013). In 2014, the US Foundation for Informed Medical Decisions named her one of 25 Shared Decision-Making Champions worldwide. She represents Australia on the steering committee of the International Patient Decision Aids Standards, serves on the international engagement committee of the Society for Medical Decision Making, and advises organizations including the Australian Commission on Safety and Quality in Healthcare, the Royal Australian College of General Practitioners, Cancer Australia, and state agencies such as NSW Agency for Clinical Innovation. In 2022, she was ranked in the top 100,000 scientists worldwide and top 2% in her field.
