Professor M. D. Lamawansa serves as Senior Professor and Chair of the Department of Surgery in the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Peradeniya. He obtained his MBBS with Second Class Honours from the University of Ruhuna (Galle) in 1984, Master of Surgery (MS) in General Surgery from the University of Colombo in 1989, PhD from the University of Western Australia in Perth in 1994, and Fellowship of the Royal College of Surgeons (FRCS) from Edinburgh in 2001. His academic career at the University of Peradeniya began in 1991 as a Lecturer in Surgery, advancing to Senior Lecturer, Professor, Head of the Department of Surgery, and Chair. Since 1994, he has been a Consultant Surgeon at Teaching Hospital Peradeniya, specializing in general surgery and renal transplantation for adults and children. He held key administrative roles including Dean of the Faculty of Medicine, member of the University Senate, member of the Board of Study in Surgery at the Postgraduate Institute of Medicine, and served as the 22nd Vice-Chancellor of the University of Peradeniya from August 2021.
Professor Lamawansa's research specializations encompass vascular surgery, arterial injury and repair, intimal hyperplasia, the effects of vitamin D3 and sympathectomy on arteries, renovascular reconstruction, kidney transplantation, and trauma care. Key publications include "Vitamin D3 exacerbates intimal hyperplasia in balloon-injured arteries" (British Journal of Surgery, 1996), "Morphometric changes seen in Balloon-injured porcine iliac Arteries: The influence of sympathectomy on Intimal Hyperplasia and Remodelling" (European Journal of Vascular and Endovascular Surgery, 1997), "Short-term and long-term outcome following renovascular reconstruction" (Cardiovascular Surgery, 1995), "First experience of pediatric kidney transplantation in Sri Lanka" (Pediatric Transplantation, 2007), and "Incidence of Major Physical Injuries in a rural community in Sri Lanka" (Indian Journal of Community Medicine, 2008). He contributed to surgical education as an examiner for MD and MS Surgery programs, MRCS, and as a trainer in general and transplant surgery.
