About Madeline

Dr Madeline Shelling is a Research Fellow in the Faculty of Medical and Health Sciences at the University of Auckland, with appointments in Epidemiology and Biostatistics. She holds a PhD in Māori Health from the University of Auckland and a Bachelor of Science (Honours) in Geography and Environmental Management. Her research focuses on Māori health, food security, and food sovereignty, including kaupapa Māori studies examining the impacts of colonisation on food (in)security. Shelling has contributed to publications such as the 2026 article “Colonisation is a Determinant of Food (In)security: Findings from a Kaupapa Māori Study” in Kōtuitui: New Zealand Journal of Social Sciences Online. She is an honorary research fellow and has been involved in postdoctoral health research at the university. Shelling is of Ngāti Porou descent and has also worked as a researcher at Ihi Research.
