About Manoj

Professor Manoj Sivan MD FRCP Ed serves as Clinical Professor and Honorary Consultant in Physical and Rehabilitation Medicine within the School of Medicine at the University of Leeds, affiliated with the Leeds Institute for Rheumatic and Musculoskeletal Medicine. He earned his MBBS in Medicine in 1999, an MD (Research) in Rehabilitation Robotics from the University of Leeds, FRCP Ed, a Diploma in Exercise Medicine, and a PgC in Medical Imaging. His academic career began as the UK's first NIHR Academic Clinical Fellow in Rehabilitation Medicine at Leeds from 2007 to 2012. He was appointed Consultant in Rehabilitation Medicine at Salford Royal NHS Foundation Trust in 2012 and served as Honorary Senior Lecturer in the Human Pain Research Group at the University of Manchester. Since 2017, he has held the position of Associate Clinical Professor in Rehabilitation Medicine at the University of Leeds, with NHS Consultant roles at Leeds Teaching Hospitals Trust and Leeds Community Healthcare Trust, advancing to Clinical Professor in 2024. Sivan leads the Leeds arm of the Human Pain Research Group, a collaboration across universities of Leeds, Manchester, and Liverpool.

Sivan's research focuses on pain medicine, autonomic medicine, rehabilitation technology, Long COVID, musculoskeletal conditions, neurorehabilitation, long-term conditions, sleep medicine, outcome measurement, global health, physiology of pain, dysautonomia interventions, post-COVID mechanisms, exercise medicine, robotic rehabilitation, ultrasound diagnostics, and integrated care pathways. Over the last six years, he has attracted £8.0 million in research funding, including £4.6 million as Chief Investigator on projects such as the 2021 NIHR LOCOMOTION study, NHS England and Scotland evaluations of Long COVID services, MRC validations of the C19-YRS scale, and the HERITAGE study on Long COVID and ME/CFS. He has supervised multiple PhD and MD students on topics including autonomic dysfunction, chronic pain in Long COVID, and brainwave entrainment for pain management. Awards include the 2024 ISPRM Sidney Licht Award for lifetime contributions to disability care, 2022 George Burniston Medal, 2022 Innovate UK Collaboration award, 2021 BMJ Clinical Leadership award, 2016 Jill Simpson clinical excellence award, and 2014 European Academy of Rehabilitation Medicine Prize. Sivan is Editor-in-Chief of Advances in Rehabilitation Science and Practice (SAGE) and the Oxford Handbook of Rehabilitation Medicine. He was President of the British Society of Physical and Rehabilitation Medicine (2022-2024), UK representative for ESPRM, Chair of ISPRM INFORM taskforce, RCP CPD lead for Rehabilitation Medicine, WHO Europe advisor, and National Rehabilitation Centre advisor since 2023. He contributes to MSc Sport and Exercise Medicine teaching and leads national musculoskeletal courses.
