Marcello Calisti is an Associate Professor in Agri-Robotics at the University of Lincoln, within the School of Engineering and Physical Sciences and the Lincoln Institute for Agri-Food Technology. He obtained his BSc in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Perugia in 2005, MSc in Biomedical Engineering from the University of Florence in 2008, and PhD in BioRobotics from Scuola Superiore Sant'Anna in 2012. Prior to his appointment at Lincoln in late 2020, he held positions at The BioRobotics Institute of Scuola Superiore Sant'Anna, contributing to pioneering work in soft robotics.
His research specializations encompass bioinspired robotics, soft robotics, robot locomotion, underwater robotics, and agri-robotics applications. At the University of Lincoln, Calisti leads key projects funded by the Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council, including Agri-Robotics Unleashed for integrating robotic harvesting into greenhouse designs, Intelligent Singulating and Labelling of Developing trees Using Robotics for forest nursery automation, Robotic Phenotyping of fruit traits, and Crop Care initiatives. He supervises advanced MSc projects on data-driven greenhouse control and benchmarking for soft robotic harvesting. Calisti's influential publications include 'An octopus-bioinspired solution to movement and manipulation for soft robots' (2011), 'Dynamic model of a multibending soft robot arm driven by cables' (2014), 'Fundamentals of soft robot locomotion' (2017), 'Bioinspired locomotion and grasping in water: the soft eight-arm OCTOPUS robot' (2015), and 'Neural network and jacobian method for solving the inverse statics of a cable-driven soft arm with nonconstant curvature' (2015). He chaired the RoboSoft International robotic competition in 2021 and has given invited lectures on underwater legged robotics. His work has garnered over 4,600 citations, advancing technologies for sustainable agriculture and marine operations.
