Dr. Marcus Funk serves as Associate Professor of Mass Communication and Journalism in the Department of Mass Communication at Sam Houston State University. He holds a Ph.D. in journalism from the University of Texas at Austin (2013), an M.A. from the University of Texas at Austin, and a B.A. from Trinity University. Before entering academia, Funk gained extensive professional experience as a reporter, editor, and Legislature correspondent for Texas news outlets, including The Dallas Morning News and Community Impact Newspaper, as well as various community newspapers.
Funk's research focuses on podcasting, digital media assemblage, conservative media, agenda setting, digital community journalism, and far-right media. His peer-reviewed scholarship has been published in prominent journals such as Mass Communication & Society and Journalism Studies. Key publications include "Centrist Language, Camouflaged Ideology: Assembled Text-Based Content on Mainstream and Ideological News Podcasts" (2022), "Setting a Q-uestionable attribute agenda: QAnon, far-right congressional candidates and irrational domains" (2021, Agenda Setting Journal), and "Pandemic Podcasting: Industry Disruption, Organizational Adaptation, and Hybrid Workflows" (2024, Journalism Practice, co-authored with Ryan Broussard and Lindsey A. Sherrill). His work has garnered over 300 citations according to Google Scholar. At Sam Houston State University, Funk teaches courses in media literacy and fact-checking, podcasting, copy editing, and digital audio production. He has presented his research at the International Symposium on Journalism (ISOJ) in 2017 and 2023, serves on the university's Curriculum Committee, and co-hosts the "Structurally Sound" podcast for the Institute for Homeland Security.
