Dr Margaret Hutchison is a Senior Lecturer in the School of Humanities and Social Sciences at UNSW Canberra, University of New South Wales. She holds a PhD in History from the Australian National University and a Bachelor of Arts (Honours, First Class) from the University of Adelaide. Her research specializations include the policies and practices of care for Australian veterans, cultural legacies of war, Australia and the First World War, social and cultural legacies of war, and war memory and heritage. Her current work focuses on the history of veteran suicide in Australia, serving as a Chief Investigator on an Australian Research Council Discovery Project that investigates its historical and social dimensions.
Hutchison has held several academic and research appointments, including lecturer in History at the Australian Catholic University and researcher on the Official History of Australian Operations in Afghanistan, Iraq, and East Timor at the Australian War Memorial. Her key publications encompass the monograph Painting War: A History of Australia's First World War Art Scheme (Cambridge University Press, 2018); co-edited volumes Portraits of Remembrance: Painting, Memory and the First World War (University of Alabama Press, 2020) and Exiting War: The British Empire and the 1918-20 Moment (Manchester University Press, 2022); and journal articles such as 'A Symbol of Imperial Unity? The Australian Colonies and the 1897 Imperial Conference' (Australian Journal of Politics & History, 2023, with Little A and Mountford B), ''Old Age is Not a War Disability': Debating Aged Care for Nurses of World War I in post-1945 Australia' (Australian Historical Studies, 2021), and 'The Longer Battle: Australia, World War I and Its Aftermaths' (Australian Historical Studies, 2021, with Fathi R, Varnava A, and Walsh M). She has received major grants including Australian Research Council Discovery Project DP230101689 (2023-2026, $490,170 AUD), Linkage Project LP250100075 (2026-2029, $300,051 AUD), Australian Army History Unit Research Grants Scheme (2022-2025, $44,562 AUD), and Royal Commission into Defence and Veteran Suicide Grant (2022, $89,000 AUD). Her contributions advance scholarship on military history, veteran welfare, and commemorative practices.
