Associate Professor Marie Ryan serves as Associate Dean of Business Services in the School of Business and Law at Edith Cowan University, overseeing the disciplines of Marketing, Entrepreneurship and Innovation, Hospitality and Tourism, and Sport, Recreation and Event Management. She has held teaching positions for over 20 years at Edith Cowan University and other Western Australian universities. Prior to academia, Marie worked in industry as a marketing research provider and buyer for international organisations and federal government departments. Her academic qualifications include a Doctor of Philosophy from The University of Western Australia in 2007, a Master of Business from Curtin University of Technology in 1992, and a Bachelor of Commerce with First Class Honours from The University of Western Australia in 1984. Marie's PhD thesis examined individuals' attachment to their environment and its influence on consumption choices in rural Western Australia, a theme she has extended to pro-environmental behaviour, tourist destination choice, sustainable development, and repeat consumption activities.
Marie's research interests encompass the impact of place, people, and object attachment on consumption behaviour, consumer behaviour, community branding of local produce, multivariate analysis, teaching and learning research, and small business development in rural centres. With 20 years of experience employing alternative research methods such as photo-elicitation, autodriving, projective techniques, introspection, and semiotics, she has contributed numerous publications to international peer-reviewed journals and presented at national and international conferences. Key works include 'Leveraging Consumer Socialisation Agents to Increase Indigenous Student Participation in Higher Education' (Journal of Social Marketing, 2025), 'DEI and Discrimination in the Marketing Industry: Exploring the Lived Experiences in the Workplace' (Australasian Marketing Journal, 2025), 'Determinants of Switching Intention in the Electricity Markets - An Integrated Structural Model Approach' (Journal of Retailing and Consumer Services, 2022), 'A multidimensional scale for measuring online brand community social capital (OBCSC)' (Journal of Business Research, 2019), and the report 'A way to go: Diversity, equity and inclusion in WA's marketing industry' (2024). Recent projects address niche tourism, fee compliance, value in hospitality small businesses, and food security.
