Marilyn Swan, PhD, RN, is Professor, Department Chair, and Pre-Licensure Director in the School of Nursing at Minnesota State University, Mankato, College of Allied Health and Nursing. She earned a PhD in Nursing from South Dakota State University in 2015, MS in Nursing from Minnesota State University, Mankato in 2005, BS in Nursing from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee in 1996, and AD in Nursing from Joliet Junior College in 1985. Swan joined the faculty at Minnesota State University, Mankato in 2012 and has since advanced to her current leadership roles, focusing on nursing education, curriculum development, and innovative teaching methods including family-focused simulations for undergraduate family nursing education.
Swan's academic interests and research specializations center on rural life, nursing theory, family nursing, simulation pedagogy, and nursing education. Her key publications include "Familiarity: A Concept Analysis on Rural Life" (Swan, Hobbs, & Gietzen, 2023, Online Journal of Rural Nursing and Health Care), "Lack of Anonymity and Secondary Traumatic Stress in Rural Nurses" (Swan & Hobbs, 2021, Online Journal of Rural Nursing and Health Care), "Early Career Nurses' Experiences of Providing Family Nursing Care: Perceived Benefits and Challenges" (Swan & Eggenberger, 2020, Journal of Family Nursing), "Concept Analysis: Lack of Anonymity" (Swan & Hobbs, 2017, Journal of Advanced Nursing), "Obstetric Nurses’ Self-Efficacy, Demographic Characteristics, and Family Focused Care During Simulated Events" (Ehmke, Van Gelderen, Swan, & Bourdeanu, 2022, Creative Nursing), and book chapters "Lack of Anonymity: Changes for the 21st Century" in Rural Nursing: Concepts, Theory, and Practice (5th ed., 2018; 6th ed., 2022). She presented research at the 16th International Family Nursing Association Conference and International Rural Nursing Conference in 2023. In 2024, Swan received the inaugural Glen Taylor Nursing Institute Faculty Research Dissemination Award for her contributions to family and societal nursing research. She serves on the Glen Taylor Nursing Institute Advisory Board and co-chairs the Mayo Collaboration Educational Experiences council.
