Dr. Mark Borchert is the Dean of Management and Creative Arts and Professor of Business and Communication at Houghton University, where he also serves as Director of the MBA Program. He holds a Ph.D. in Communication from the University of Colorado at Boulder (1997), a Master’s degree in Radio-Television-Film from the University of Texas at Austin, and a graduate degree from seminary. Before joining Houghton, Borchert was an Associate Professor of Communications at Carson-Newman University, contributing 15 years of service and directing the Mossy Creek Documentary Arts Festival for nearly a decade. His diverse career history encompasses roles as a graduate market researcher at CableLabs during his doctoral studies, video production specialist, denominational public relations professional, church communication consultant, film festival judge, and workshop leader. Borchert integrates service learning and practical experiences into his marketing courses, leveraging the Adobe Creative Suite, Houghton University Media Lab, and campus digital production resources to enhance student engagement.
Borchert’s academic interests center on experiential learning in business communication and public relations education. His publications include book chapters exploring religion and the press, film, and cyberspace. Notable recent works are the paper 'Building Community Through Service Learning: Textual Analysis of Students' Blogs in PR Education,' featured in the 2024 AMA Proceedings, and a conference presentation titled 'Adding Relevance with Experiential Learning: Engaging Alumni in the Development and Delivery of Experiential Learning Projects' at the 2024 Atlantic Marketing Association annual meeting. He has delivered public lectures, including a faculty presentation on 'Service Learning Across the Curriculum' at Houghton University. As Dean, Borchert oversees management and creative arts programs, fostering innovation as evidenced by student successes such as second place in the 2026 AHA! Collegiate Startup Competition. His leadership extends to teaching MBA courses like Transformational Leadership and Statistics.
