Mark Fenlon serves as a sessional lecturer in Law at James Cook University within the College of Business, Law and Governance. He teaches subjects including Principles of Criminal Law A (LA2017), Criminal Law and Advocacy, and Criminal Sentencing. As a James Cook University graduate, Fenlon imparts over 19 years of legal industry experience, encompassing more than 17 years as a solicitor in private practice and public service. Previously a Senior Prosecutor for the Queensland Police Service, he prosecuted extensive caseloads in the Magistrates Court, managing 368,407 charges across 167,739 adult defendants, juvenile matters, and domestic violence applications.
In his current role as Senior Prosecutor (Northern Region, Queensland) in the Statutory Compliance and Prosecutions team at the National Heavy Vehicle Regulator, Fenlon has also acted as Practice Manager (Queensland). His professional achievements include the 2007 Queensland Law Society President’s Award for Queensland Young Lawyer of the Year, Assistant Commissioner’s and Executive Directors’ citations for domestic violence work and prosecuting a major drug trafficking syndicate, and the 2024 James Cook University Sessional Teaching Award from the College of Business, Law and Governance. Fenlon was President of the Townsville District Law Association from 2018 to 2020, serves on the Queensland Law Society Wellbeing Working Group, and acts as the QLS representative to the Law Council of Australia’s Regional, Rural and Remote Lawyers Committee. He authors articles for QLS Proctor, such as “Vicarious trauma by proxy” (2023) examining psychological distress from graphic imagery, “How would she like it if it happened to her?” (2021) on social media vilification of practitioners, and reports on JCU Law Students’ Society Pride events including the inaugural Pride in Law (2024) and Bar None: Queer Voices in Law (2025). Fenlon delivered the “Law as a Service” seminar at JCU in 2023 and held leadership positions in JCI Mackay, earning awards like Most Outstanding Chapter President in Australia and Queensland.
