Mark Hemery is a Lecturer at Curtin Law School, Curtin University, having joined the faculty in 2024. A distinguished senior lawyer in Perth with nearly four decades of practice experience primarily in labour law, he enriches legal education with his extensive professional background. He is actively developing the Employment and Industrial Relations Practice unit for the Graduate Diploma in Legal Practice and serves as Course Lead for Practical Legal Training. His practice has focused on employment law, industrial relations, discrimination, mediation, commercial litigation, and dispute resolution, representing a wide range of clients including small and large businesses on the employer side, as well as executives, managers, and individual employees on the employee side.
Hemery commenced his legal career in 1986, beginning with industrial relations litigation in Perth and Melbourne exclusively for employees and unions. Early roles included Articled Clerk and Solicitor at Dwyer Durack (1986-1988), Industrial Advocate at the Electrical Trades Union of Australia (1988-1990), and Lawyer at Electrical Trades Union WA (1988-1989). He then transitioned to large-scale commercial litigation as Senior Associate and Partner at Mallesons Stephen Jaques (now King & Wood Mallesons) in Melbourne (1993-2002). Returning to Perth in the early 2000s, he held partnership positions at commercial law firms, including Hotchkin Hanly Lawyers, where he rebuilt a strong employment law practice. He earned a Bachelor of Laws from The University of Western Australia (1981-1985) and a Master of Laws from the University of Melbourne (1992-1998). Hemery has been recognized by Doyle's Guide as a Recommended Employment Lawyer (Employee & Union Representation) in Western Australia for 2024 and 2025. He contributes to the profession as a Council Member and Employee Relations Committee member of The Law Society of Western Australia.
