Mark Rowlands is Professor and Chair of the Department of Philosophy at the University of Miami, where he also serves as Cooper Senior Scholar in the Arts and Sciences. He holds a B.A. Honours Degree in Philosophy with First Class Honours from the University of Manchester (1985) and a D.Phil. in Philosophy from the University of Oxford, Jesus College (1988). His distinguished academic career spans multiple institutions: Professor of Mental and Moral Philosophy at the University of Hertfordshire (2004-2006); Reader in Philosophy and Director of the Centre for the Philosophy of the Social Sciences at the University of Exeter (2002-2004); College Lecturer in the Department of Philosophy at University College Cork (1995-2002); and Assistant/Associate Professor in the Department of Philosophy at the University of Alabama (1988-1994).
Rowlands' research focuses on philosophy of mind, cognitive science, ethics, and animal studies, with key contributions to embodied cognition, extended mind theory, and animal morality. He is the author of twenty-three books, including The New Science of the Mind: From Extended Mind to Embodied Phenomenology (MIT Press, 2010; over 1,500 citations), Can Animals Be Moral? (Oxford University Press, 2012), The Philosopher and the Wolf (Granta Books, 2008; international bestseller with translations into over a dozen languages), The Body in Mind: Understanding Cognitive Processes (Cambridge University Press, 1999; over 700 citations), Body Language: Representation in Action (MIT Press, 2006), Running with the Pack (Granta Books, 2013), World on Fire: Humans, Animals, and the Future of the Planet (2021), and The Word of Dog (2024). His work has significantly influenced discussions in cognitive philosophy and animal ethics. Rowlands has received the Provost’s Award for Scholarly Achievement (University of Miami, 2012; $5,000), Provost’s Research Award ($10,500), Fellowship at the University of Miami Centre for the Humanities (2010), Faculty of Arts Research Merit Award (University College Cork, 2000; €7,500), AHRC Research Leave Grant (£14,013; 2005-2006), and a Templeton Foundation grant ($92,664). He has held visiting research fellowships at Macquarie University (2004), École Normale Supérieure Lyon (2013), and Ruhr-Universität Bochum (2013), and served as Writer-in-Residence at the Sunday Times Oxford Literary Festival (2013).
