Professor Mark Shipley is Professor of Clinical Medical Education at the University of Sunderland, appointed to this role in December 2024. He serves as Deputy Head of the School of Medicine and Undergraduate Programme Lead. Professor Shipley is also a Consultant Respiratory and General Internal Medicine Physician at South Tyneside and Sunderland NHS Foundation Trust. Originally from Gateshead, he has lived and worked in the north-east of England throughout his career. He graduated with an MBBS degree with Distinction from Newcastle University in 2003 and completed his foundation training in the Northern Deanery. His longstanding commitment to undergraduate medical education is evident in his various leadership positions within the Trust and the university.
Professor Shipley has been involved in the University of Sunderland's Medicine degree programme since April 2018, contributing to its development from inception. He has participated in all phases of the programme, including the creation of quality assurance frameworks, General Medical Council assessment processes, and student support mechanisms. He played a key role in achieving the programme's Provisional Primary Medical Qualification status from the General Medical Council in April 2024. Prior roles include Foundation Programme Tutor at the Trust, where he oversaw training for newly qualified doctors, and Director of Undergraduate Clinical Studies for the University of Sunderland School of Medicine, supporting students' clinical placements. In October 2024, he was appointed as a General Medical Council Associate, working with the Quality Assurance Monitoring and Improvement team to regulate and enhance medical education and training standards at universities across the UK and overseas, providing expert guidance on compliance with General Medical Council requirements.
