Dr. Markus Renner serves as a Senior Clinical Lecturer at the University of Otago and as a Consultant Anaesthetist and Intensivist at Dunedin Hospital within the Southern District Health Board. He earned his State Exam Med in 1998 from the University of Tübingen, Germany, and completed his Specialist Anaesthesia qualification (Spec Anaes) in 2004 from Baden-Württemberg. Renner holds additional certifications including EDIC (European Diploma in Intensive Care) and DDU (Diploma in Diagnostic Ultrasound). He has been fully registered with the Medical Council of New Zealand since June 10, 2014, within the vocational scope of Anaesthesia.
Renner's clinical practice is based at Te Puna Wai Ora, Southern Critical Care at Dunedin Hospital, a tertiary referral center serving Otago and Southland regions. Early in his career, while at the Department of Anesthesiology and Critical Care Medicine at Innsbruck Medical University, he co-authored a study titled 'Administration of 100% oxygen before removal of the tracheal tube facilitates the occurrence of atelectasis,' published in Anaesthesia in 2004. More recently, he has contributed to multinational research efforts in critical care. These include the Delphi process consensus statement 'Criteria, Processes, and Determination of Competence in Basic Critical Care Echocardiography Training,' published in CHEST in 2022; the survey 'Personal Protective Equipment Preparedness in Asia-Pacific Intensive Care Units during the COVID-19 Pandemic,' published in Australian Critical Care in 2021; and the LOVIT randomized controlled trial 'Intravenous Vitamin C in Adults with Sepsis in the Intensive Care Unit,' published in the New England Journal of Medicine in 2022. Renner also co-authored responses to editorials in CHEST on related topics. Beyond research, he acts as Medical Director for the Otago Rescue Helicopter service, supporting critical care retrievals and training paramedics in scenarios such as birthing emergencies. In 2020, he organized a medics' triathlon that raised $3000 for a colleague's family. Renner presented at the ANZICS 2022 conference on welcoming and supporting international medical graduates into intensive care teams.
