Marni Boynton serves as the Subject Librarian for Humanities at the University of Otago Library in Dunedin, New Zealand. She provides specialized library services and support to faculty, researchers, and students in a diverse array of disciplines within the Humanities, including Anthropology, Archaeology, Indigenous Studies, Māori Studies, Music, Pacific Studies, Performing Arts, and Theatre Studies. Boynton develops and maintains subject-specific LibGuides, delivers instructional workshops—such as the MAOR102 Basic Library Search Skills session—and offers personalized research consultations to enhance information literacy and resource discovery. Additionally, she acts as the Library Kaiāwhina Māori for the Hocken Collections, a key research library, where she facilitates access to special collections and supports Māori student engagement through targeted library services. Her role extends to liaison responsibilities, bridging the library with academic departments to meet research and teaching needs in Commerce and Humanities.
Boynton earned her Bachelor of Arts from the University of Otago and her Master of Library and Information Studies from Victoria University of Wellington. Appointed as Subject Librarian for Commerce and Humanities in 2006, she has accumulated over 18 years of service at the university as of 2024. Her previous positions include Māori Resources Library Assistant (held for at least six years by 2012), client services lending assistant, and a secondment to the Hocken Library. Having lived in Ōtepoti Dunedin since 2000, Boynton is a proud member of Tūhoe iwi (Ngāti Raka hapū), associated with Tātaiāhape marae, Maungapōhatu mountain, Tauranga river, Mataatua canoe, and Te Waimana place of origin. In her community involvement, she volunteers at the Dunedin Gasworks Museum and the Waikouaiti Heritage Coast Centre, pursuing her passions for heritage preservation and museum work.
