Marshall Maude is a ceramic artist and Associate Professor of Ceramics in the Department of Visual Art at the University of Kansas, where he serves as Chairperson since 2021. He earned a B.F.A. in Ceramics from the University of Kansas in 1996, completed Post-Baccalaureate Studies in Ceramics at Northern Arizona University in 2000, and received an M.F.A. in Ceramics with Honors from the University of Kansas in 2003. Maude's academic career began as Adjunct Ceramic Faculty at the University of Kansas and Benedictine College from 2006 to 2010, progressed to Assistant Professor at KU from 2010 to 2016, and Associate Professor since 2016. He has held key administrative positions including Associate Chair of the Department of Visual Art from 2018 to 2021, Founder and Acting Director of the Interdisciplinary Ceramic Research Center since 2019, and Co-Director of the School of the Arts.
Maude's artistic practice centers on ceramic sculpture and wood firing techniques, drawing inspiration from historical ceramics of China, ancient Greece, and Native American imagery alongside contemporary ceramic art. His work has garnered significant recognition through awards such as the First Place Award at the Wichita National in 2022 (Juror: Eddie Dominguez), Best of Show at Contemporary Clay 2014 Biennial National Exhibition (Juror: Jim Romberg), Tile Heritage Prix Primo at the San Angelo National Ceramic Competition in 2014 (Juror: Léopold L. Foulem), Best of Show at the University of Dallas Regional Ceramic Competition in 2010 (Juror: Cynthia Bringle, accompanied by solo exhibition), and Honorable Mention at the 5th World Ceramic Biennale in 2009. Notable solo exhibitions include 'the sun and the moon' at Lawrence Art Center (2024), 'RE:Claim' at Cobb Mountain Art & Ecology Project (2022) and Taller de Terreno, Mexico (2021), 'Retrace' at Naropa University Cube Gallery (2020), 'Infinite Timeline' at Lanning Gallery (2018), and 'Return' at Northern Arizona University Art Museum (2017). He has completed artist residencies at Sanbao Ceramic Art Institute in China, Guldagergaard International Ceramic Research Center in Denmark, Taller de Terreno in Mexico, and Cobb Mountain Art & Ecology Project in California, enhancing his contributions to the field through innovative kiln design and firing processes.
