Dr. Marta Kawka is a Lecturer in Visual Arts and Media Arts in the School of Education and Professional Studies at Griffith University's Gold Coast campus. She holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts (Honours), Bachelor of Education, PhD from Griffith University (2009), Graduate Certificate in Gestalt Therapy, and Graduate Diploma in Professional Counselling. With nearly two decades of teaching pre-service teachers in senior secondary visual arts education, her courses cover junior and senior secondary visual arts and media arts pedagogy, as well as primary arts curriculum. As a practicing artist, registered pastoral counsellor, and visual arts education academic, Kawka bridges creative arts practice, pedagogy, and spiritual inquiry.
Her research specializations include visual arts education, media arts education, interactive media, emergent learning, theological aesthetics, spirituality in artmaking, and AI-generated artworks in theological contexts. Key peer-reviewed publications comprise 'Theological imaginal reflections with AI artworks: revealing and obscuring divine knowledge in aesthetic experience' (Practical Theology, 2025), 'A heuristic inquiry into the phenomenon of creating art from a spiritual viewpoint' (Journal for the Study of Spirituality, 2024), 'The Tower of Experience: The Integral Ascent of Arts Knowing' (International Journal of Education Through Art, 2022), 'Classtrophobia: the student as troll in student course evaluations' with K. Larkin (Journal of Curriculum Theorizing, 2017), and 'Creating Flickr Photo-Narratives with First-Year Teacher Education Students' with K. Larkin and P. Danaher (Australian Journal of Teacher Education, 2012). Kawka co-edited Empowering Educators: Proven Principles and Successful Strategies (Palgrave Macmillan, 2015), contributed chapters to it, and illustrated Australian Government educational picture books including The Puddle Puzzle (2019), The Treehouse (2018), Map Makers (2018), and Pattern Sniffers (2018). She has presented at conferences such as the Asia Pacific Artistic Research Network (2024) and exhibited works like Transgressiphoria (2015).
