Martha Muller, MD, MPH, serves as Professor in the Department of Pediatrics, Division of Infectious Diseases at the University of New Mexico School of Medicine, where she holds the position of Division Chief. As a pediatric infectious disease specialist, she treats children with a broad array of infectious diseases and leads divisional efforts in clinical care, education, and research. Her professional commitments emphasize excellence in research, teaching, and service within the UNM Health System. Muller is actively involved in clinical trials through the IDeA States Pediatric Clinical Trials Network and has participated in studies related to infection prevention and management in pediatric populations. She has also served as Interim Chief of the Pediatric Pulmonary Division.
Muller's scholarly contributions include authorship on key publications addressing critical issues in pediatric infectious diseases and infection control. She is a lead author on the 'SHEA Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) White Paper Series: Practical Approaches for the Prevention of Central Line–Associated Bloodstream Infections' (Infection Control & Hospital Epidemiology, 2023). Other notable works co-authored by her encompass 'Monitoring Health Disparities in Healthcare-Associated Infection Surveillance: A Society for Healthcare Epidemiology of America Research Network Survey' (Infection Control & Hospital Epidemiology, 2023), 'SHEA Pediatric Leadership Council Commentary: Inpatient Visitor Considerations for Pediatric Patients During the Coronavirus Disease 2019 Pandemic' (Infection Control & Hospital Epidemiology, 2021), and 'Genomic Analyses of Pneumococci from Children with Sickle Cell Disease' (Cell Host & Microbe, 2014). She contributed to 'Nosocomial Chronic Osteomyelitis of the Tibia in an Otherwise Healthy Adolescent: A Case Report' and chapters in authoritative texts such as Feigin and Cherry's Textbook of Pediatric Infectious Diseases and Remington and Klein's Infectious Diseases of the Fetus and Newborn Infant. Muller has secured funding as principal investigator from the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation for projects including the Cystic Fibrosis Center of Excellence Pharmacy Services. In university governance, she co-chaired the Faculty Senate Policy Committee (2018-2019), served on the Physician Advisory Group, Policy Alignment Workgroup, and UNM Medical Leadership Academy Steering Committee. Her work advances pediatric infection control guidelines and disparities research.
