Martin Jones is the Operations Manager for the University Union at the University of Otago in Dunedin, New Zealand. With more than 25 years of service to the institution, he oversees operations across multiple busy staff and public-facing spaces, including the Hunter Building, ISB Link, University Union facilities, production and satellite outlet kitchens, and kitchenettes equipped with heating, storage, service, and refrigeration systems. His management extends to over 350 staff members across 22 business units within the University Union, ensuring efficient functionality and support for students and campus users in areas such as the UBar, Auahi Ora, Otago Business School, Marsh Study Centre, St David Street complex, Prayer Rooms, Parents Room, Locals, Toroa Dining Room, and Women’s Room.
Jones excels in health, safety, and wellbeing, providing high-level practical and strategic advice to the Campus and Collegiate Life Division. A member of the University Emergency Management Team since its formation, he has contributed expertise in hospitality during the COVID-19 pandemic and other crises. As a Mental Health First Aider, he chairs the University Union health and safety committee, investigates incidents like those in the Vault, represents his division in the Operations Group, and organizes training courses for his team. His sustainability efforts include leading recycling programs for challenging items like cartons in 2024, establishing the Link recycling facility—one of only five in Dunedin—promoting single-use cup reductions, opening a gluten-free cafe in 2019, and installing Te Reo Māori signage across cafes, earning the He Toki Reo Award in 2018. He has also organized barista bootcamps and annual competitions to enhance campus coffee services and served as Acting General Manager for Uniprint. In recognition of his outstanding contributions, Jones received the individual Health, Safety and Wellbeing Award at the 2023 University Staff Awards. An avid tramper, cyclist, and supporter of the local Parkrun at the Botanic Gardens, he embodies a holistic approach to campus life.
