Mary Berg, MD, is a Professor of Clinical Practice in Blood Bank and Transfusion Medicine in the Department of Pathology at the University of Colorado Anschutz Medical Campus. She earned her BS in Medical Science from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee in 1987 and her MD from the Medical College of Wisconsin in 1991. She completed an internal medicine internship at Evanston Hospital, residency in anatomic and clinical pathology at Case Western Reserve University/University Hospitals of Cleveland—where she served as Chief Resident in Clinical Pathology—and a fellowship in blood banking and transfusion medicine. Board certified in anatomic and clinical pathology and blood banking/transfusion medicine since 1997, Dr. Berg's career includes Assistant Professor positions at the University of Colorado Health Sciences Center (1997-2002), where she was Medical Director of the Transfusion Service at Denver Health Medical Center; the University of Arizona (2002-2008), directing transfusion medicine at University Medical Center; and her return to the University of Colorado in 2008, advancing to Professor in 2017. She currently serves as Program Director of the Transfusion Medicine Fellowship since 2008, Associate Program Director for the Anatomic and Clinical Pathology Residency since 2015, and Medical Director for Transfusion Services, BDC Apheresis Service, and Autotransfusion Service at University of Colorado Hospital.
Dr. Berg's academic interests encompass transfusion medicine, blood banking, patient blood management, apheresis management, and pathology education. Key publications include co-authorship of Standards for Perioperative Autologous Blood Collection and Administration (10th ed., 2022), "Economics of Patient Blood Management" (Annals of Blood, 2024), "Continued Positive Job Search Experience for New Pathologists Seeking First Employment During the COVID-19 Pandemic (2020-2022)" (Archives of Pathology & Laboratory Medicine, 2025), and contributions to apheresis guidelines in Transfusion (2019, 2018). She has delivered lectures and webinars on clinical laboratory and blood bank topics and holds committee roles in organizations such as AABB. Dr. Berg has earned repeated Summit Awards for excellence in resident teaching (2010-2024), "Top Doctor" recognitions by 5280 Magazine (2023-2024), South Central Association of Blood Banks Technical/Scientific Award Lecturer (2023), and Larry L. Trow Memorial Education Awards (2019, 2016).
