About Mary-Louise

Mary-Louise Byrne is a Professor and Professional Geoscientist (PGeo) in the Department of Geography and Environmental Studies at Wilfrid Laurier University, part of the Faculty of Science. She serves as Chair of the Department of Geography and Environmental Studies. Byrne earned her PhD in physical geography from McMaster University in 1992 and her MSc from McMaster University in 1986. Her professional designation as PGeo underscores her expertise in geoscience practice.

Byrne's research focuses on coastal geomorphology, beach processes and management, and physical geography, with emphasis on sediment transport processes in beach-dune systems and the management of Great Lakes beaches and dunes in protected areas. She conducts long-term investigations at four primary sites: Point Pelee National Park, Pinery Provincial Park, Sandbanks Provincial Park, and Sauble Beach. Through collaboration with local groups, Byrne develops sustainable management plans for beach and dune stewardship. Her scholarly contributions include serving as editor of the book Landscapes of Transition: Landform Assemblages and Transformations in Cold Regions (GeoJournal Library, volume 68, 2002). She has co-authored chapters on cold regions shorelines, such as 'Typical Aspects of Cold Regions Shorelines' with Jean-Claude Dionne, and entries on Great Lakes coastal processes. As a university-designated expert, Byrne addresses topics like sustainable coastal management and environmental conservation in Canada's Great Lakes region, contributing to academic discourse and practical applications in geomorphology and environmental studies.
