About Mary

Mary O’Neill serves as Associate Professor B in Paramedic Studies within the Pre-Hospital Care Programme and Course Director for both the Bachelor of Science in Paramedic Studies and the Bachelor of Science in Paramedic Studies (Practitioner Entry) at the University of Limerick’s School of Medicine, part of the Faculty of Education and Health Sciences. She has held the positions of Clinical Tutor and Course Director for the BSc Paramedic Studies programme since approximately 2018, fostering paramedic education through her extensive clinical and academic expertise in nursing, midwifery, and pre-hospital emergency care. Mary O’Neill possesses a Bachelor of Science degree, Postgraduate Diplomas in Neonatal Nursing and Midwifery, and a Master of Science in Midwifery, with specialized modules in quality and safety in healthcare, leadership and management, and research methodology. She maintains registration as a Nurse and Midwife with the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Ireland (NMBI) and brings a wealth of experience in multidisciplinary team collaboration to her roles.

In recognition of her contributions to the field, Mary O’Neill was appointed to the Pre-Hospital Emergency Care Council (PHECC) effective 26 February 2025 for a term ending 25 February 2029, and she serves as a member of the PHECC Quality and Safety Committee. Her scholarly work focuses on innovative paramedic training methods and enhancing care outcomes for vulnerable populations, including older adults. Key publications include her co-authorship on “Acceptability and effectiveness of a 3D virtual reality cardiovascular lesson” published in the International Journal of Paramedic Practice in 2019, which explored virtual reality applications in paramedic anatomy education, and “Enhancing Existing Formal Home Care to Improve and Maintain Function and Independence in Community Dwelling Older Adults: Results of a Feasibility Study on the Implementation of the ‘Care to Move’ Exercise Programme” in the International Journal of Environmental Research and Public Health in 2022. Additionally, she has contributed to qualitative research on embedding physical activity within community home support services and participated in outreach initiatives such as the Care Aware Crew programme aimed at school education on care awareness. Mary O’Neill has also presented as Senior Clinical Tutor at events like the EMS Show, underscoring her influence in advancing paramedic practice and education.
