About Mary

Professor Mary Spongberg is Emeritus Professor at Southern Cross University. She holds a BA(Hons) and PhD from the University of Sydney. She began her academic career as an NHMRC postdoctoral research fellow in Gender Studies at the University of Sydney. She spent nearly twenty years at Macquarie University, working at the National Centre for HIV Social Research and in the Department of Modern History. Prior to joining Southern Cross University, she served as Dean of the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences at the University of Technology Sydney.

At Southern Cross University, Professor Spongberg held the position of Senior Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Research), with strategic responsibility for research functions, partnerships, and training. Her research focuses on women’s and gender history, literary history, and historiography. She is the author of monographs including Feminizing Venereal Disease, Writing Women’s History Since the Renaissance, and Empathetic Histories (Bloomsbury, 2019). She co-edited the Companion to Women’s History (2005) with Barbara Caine and Ann Curthoys. Professor Spongberg has held multiple Australian Research Council grants and is currently working on an ARC Discovery Project on Jane Austen. She serves as editor of the journal Australian Feminist Studies and on the editorial board of Women’s History Review, as well as the Board of the New Historia at the New School, New York. She is a member of SCU’s Harvest to Health Research Cluster.
