Rate My Professor Matt Bell

Dr Matt Bell is a Senior Professional Practice Fellow at the University of Otago's Centre for Rural Health, where he serves as the Regional Co-ordinator for the West Coast in the Rural Medical Immersion Programme (RMIP). Affiliated with the Faculty of Medicine within the Health Sciences Division, his work focuses on immersing University of Otago medical students in rural clinical environments to cultivate future rural healthcare providers. A graduate of the RMIP himself, having participated in Greymouth in 2014, Dr Bell assumed his coordinating responsibilities in 2022. Under his guidance, the programme has expanded to include placements in additional rural and remote locations, strengthening its impact on addressing New Zealand's rural doctor shortage. He highlights the programme's success in encouraging graduates to pursue rural medical careers.

Dr Bell's academic journey began with a Bachelor of Science from the University of Canterbury, followed by medical training at the University of Otago. Post-graduation, he accumulated extensive clinical experience across urban and rural hospitals and various medical departments. He returned to Greymouth to specialize in General Practice, practicing as a rural GP for the past six years while balancing part-time clinical duties with his educational role. Currently, he is undertaking further studies in musculoskeletal medicine to broaden his general practice capabilities.

In recognition of his commitment to rural health education, Dr Bell received the 2025 Emerging Rural Educator Award at the National Rural Health Conference. He has become a highly respected member of the RMIP team, navigating its significant expansion. As both practitioner and educator, Dr Bell exemplifies the seamless integration of clinical practice and teaching, mentoring students to embrace the challenges and rewards of rural medicine and thereby enhancing healthcare delivery in underserved regions.
