Matt O'Kane is a casual academic at the University of New South Wales, primarily affiliated with the UNSW Business School's School of Information Systems and Technology Management, where he serves as Assistant Course Convenor for cybersecurity courses. He also holds a part-time lecturer position in the School of Systems & Computing at UNSW Canberra. His academic background includes a Bachelor of Science in Business Information Technology (Honours Class 1, Co-op Scholarship) from UNSW, a Master of Business Administration (Executive) from the Australian Graduate School of Management (jointly offered by UNSW and the University of Sydney), and a Master of Cyber Security majoring in Digital Forensics from UNSW Canberra, completed in June 2023. O'Kane brings extensive industry experience to his teaching, integrating practical insights from over 130 cyber and forensic engagements into the curriculum across UNSW Sydney's Business School, UNSW Canberra's School of Professional Studies, and other institutions.
As CEO and founder of Notion Digital Forensics, a cyber incident response and defence company, O'Kane delivers cyber emergency response, digital forensics, and cybersecurity services to Australian clients. In the past five years, he has led responses to more than 130 cyber breaches, corporate espionage incidents, and insider threat investigations. His expertise covers cybersecurity for small to medium businesses and large organizations, cyber crime, white-collar crime, digital forensics on phones, computers, cloud services, videos, and photos, as well as expert witness standards like NIST 800-86 and NIST 800-61. In teaching, he is assistant convenor for INFS3922 Cybersecurity Trends and Best Practices and INFS5922 Contemporary Practices in Cybersecurity Management at UNSW Business School. At UNSW Canberra, he wrote and convened ZEIT8018 Cyber Resilience: Management, Governance and Acquisition and ZEIT8032 Information Assurance Principles, and convenes the Information Security Leadership for Government micro-credential. O'Kane's academic interests focus on applied cybersecurity practice and integrating cybersecurity concepts into primary, secondary, and tertiary education curricula, along with public awareness campaigns. Selected as a UNSOMNIA Presenter by the UNSW Centre for Ideas in 2024, he presented on strategies to enhance cyber education at a TED-like event. His contributions include government submissions on cyber reforms, ransom payments, and Cyber Incident Review Board (2024), and MyID accessibility for blind and low vision users (2024).
