Matthew Chang is Provost’s Chair and Professor of Biochemistry at the Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine, National University of Singapore. He serves as Executive Director of the National Centre for Engineering Biology, Singapore, and holds concurrent directorships of the Singapore Consortium for Synthetic Biology, the NUS Synthetic Biology for Clinical and Technological Innovation, and the Wilmar-NUS Corporate Laboratory. Chang received his B.S. in Chemical and Biological Engineering from Seoul National University and his Ph.D. in Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering from the University of Maryland. His prior appointments include postdoctoral research associate at the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, research assistant professor at the University of Maryland Biotechnology Institute, and Assistant Professor at Nanyang Technological University before joining NUS.
Chang’s research centers on synthetic biology and metabolic engineering, with a focus on engineering microorganisms and synthetic genetic systems for biomedical and biomanufacturing applications. He has authored over 130 scholarly publications and delivered more than 180 invited presentations. Chang co-founded the Asian Synthetic Biology Association and the Global Biofoundry Alliance, and he has served as Co-Chair of the World Economic Forum’s Global Future Council on Synthetic Biology. His contributions have been recognized with the National Research Foundation Investigatorship Award, the NUHS-Mochtar Riady Pinnacle Research Excellence Award, the Presidential Award from the Korean Federation of Science and Technology Societies, and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s Scientific and Technological Achievement Award. He has mentored numerous students and researchers and serves in editorial roles for leading scientific journals.
