Matthew Hill is a Lecturer in Paramedicine in the School of Health at the University of the Sunshine Coast. He earned a Bachelor of Paramedic Science from the University of the Sunshine Coast and a Master of Paramedic Science (Critical Care) from Edith Cowan University, and holds membership as a Member of the Australasian College of Paramedicine (MACPara). With more than 10 years of clinical experience as a registered paramedic with the Queensland Ambulance Service, Hill has held advanced positions including Advanced Care Paramedic II, Critical Care Paramedic, Critical Care Flight Paramedic, Clinical Support Officer, and Senior Clinical Educator. Before his appointment at UniSC in 2021, he taught in undergraduate and postgraduate Paramedic Science programs at Central Queensland University. Hill's journey into paramedicine began after high school in regional Victoria, where modest grades led him to complete UniSC's Tertiary Preparation Pathway, enabling entry into his degree and shaping his dedication to community service through healthcare.
In his academic role, Hill focuses on developing critical thinking and problem-solving skills in students, crucial for paramedics facing diverse clinical challenges. He supports the student cohort via the Sunshine Coast University Paramedics Association (SCUPA), promoting teamwork and community. Currently a PhD candidate at Central Queensland University, his research examines the mental health and wellbeing of paramedics and their families, specifically the effects of traumatic stress on paramedics' intimate partners. Key publications include 'Secondary traumatic stress in partners of paramedics: A scoping review' (Australasian Emergency Care, 2024) and contributions to studies on post-traumatic stress symptoms in paramedics. He has presented at conferences on secondary traumatic stress experiences. Hill is an Associate Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (AFHEA), serves on the UniSC SAGE Athena Swan Implementation Committee for gender equity, and previously acted as Peer Support Officer, underscoring his commitment to paramedic mental health support.
