Matthew Page is an Associate Professor (Research) in Biostatistics, Data Analytics/Modelling and Health Economics within the School of Public Health and Preventive Medicine at Monash University, Faculty of Medicine. He holds a BBSc (Hons) and completed his PhD at Monash University from 2011 to 2015 under the supervision of Professor Joanne McKenzie. Page began his career in 2008 as a Research Assistant at Cochrane Australia, contributing to systematic reviews on musculoskeletal conditions such as carpal tunnel syndrome and hip replacements. Following his PhD, he served as a Visiting Postdoctoral Fellow at the University of Bristol, UK, from 2015 to 2017, collaborating with experts on risk of bias tools. His career progression has been supported by the NHMRC Early Career Fellowship (2015-2019), ARC Discovery Early Career Researcher Award (2020-2023), and currently the NHMRC Emerging Leadership Investigator Fellowship. As Deputy Head of the Methods in Evidence Synthesis Unit, he leads research programs advancing evidence synthesis methods.
Page's research focuses on improving the conduct, reporting, and appraisal of systematic reviews and meta-analyses, particularly transparency, reproducibility, and risk of bias in health research. He co-led the development of the PRISMA 2020 statement, an updated guideline for reporting systematic reviews published in 2021 with over 145,000 citations, and contributed to the RoB 2 tool for assessing risk of bias in randomized trials (2019, cited over 31,000 times). He served as Associate Scientific Editor for the 2019 edition of the Cochrane Handbook for Systematic Reviews of Interventions. His influence is evident in leadership roles including Co-chair of the PRISMA Executive and Cochrane Methods Executive, Co-convenor of the Cochrane Bias Methods Group, and editorial positions on the Journal of Clinical Epidemiology and PLoS Medicine. Awards include the Cochrane Bill Silverman Prize (2018), Australasian Epidemiological Association prizes, and recognition as a Clarivate Highly Cited Researcher in Social Sciences (2024).
