Dr. Matthew R. Smith is a Professor and Interim Associate Dean in the College of Education and Human Sciences at Tennessee Technological University. He holds an Ed.D. in School Administration from Vanderbilt University, earned in 2003. As Director of the College of Education and Human Sciences Student Success Center, Dr. Smith leads efforts to support student academic advising, success initiatives, and retention within the college. Located in T.J. Farr Building Room 101, the center provides comprehensive assistance to students in education programs. Dr. Smith also serves as a faculty member in the Department of Curriculum and Instruction, specifically in Instructional Leadership, where he contributes to teacher preparation and leadership development. His administrative responsibilities extend to participating in college executive leadership councils and presenting at awards receptions recognizing student and faculty achievements.
Dr. Smith's research specializations include school leadership, school and community partnerships, career and technical education, Julius Rosenwald Schools, and character education. These interests align with his expertise in educational administration and leadership. He authored the article 'Character Education: Introduction, Evolution, and Current Trends,' published in the Peabody Journal of Education (Volume 88, Issue 2, 2013, pages 139-141), offering insights into the historical development and modern applications of character education programs. Furthermore, Dr. Smith is a member of Tennessee Technological University's Faculty Research Committee, serving through 2026 to promote and oversee faculty research activities across disciplines. His combined roles in teaching, research, administration, and committee service underscore his dedication to advancing educational excellence and supporting the next generation of educators and leaders at the university.
