About Matthew

Matthew E. Taylor is a Full Professor in the Faculty of Science at the University of Alberta, where he directs the Intelligent Robot Learning Lab. He holds a Canada CIFAR AI Chair and serves as a Fellow-in-Residence at the Alberta Machine Intelligence Institute. Taylor earned his PhD in Computer Science from the University of Texas at Austin in 2008. His prior positions include a postdoctoral fellowship at the University of Southern California, an assistant professorship at Lafayette College, and an assistant professorship at Washington State University, where he held the Allred Distinguished Professorship in Artificial Intelligence. He also spent time in industry contributing to the establishment of an artificial intelligence lab at Borealis AI.

Taylor has been a principal investigator or co-principal investigator on over six million USD in research funding, including a National Science Foundation CAREER award. His research focuses on reinforcement learning, human-in-the-loop AI, multi-agent systems, and robotics. He has supervised multiple PhD and master’s students and authored over 100 peer-reviewed publications. Taylor is a recipient of awards including an IJCAI Early Career Spotlight talk, AAAI Senior Member status, and a WSU EECS Early Career Award.
