About Matti

Matti Liski is a Professor of Economics and Head of the Department of Economics at Aalto University School of Business. He obtained his Master's degree in 1992, Licentiate degree in 1995, and Doctoral degree in Business and Economics in 1997 from Helsinki School of Economics. Appointed Professor at Aalto University School of Business in 2011, he previously held positions at Helsinki School of Economics, where he was named Teacher of the Year in 2009. Liski maintains affiliations as a research associate at MIT Center for Energy and Environmental Policy Research since 2002, affiliate at University of Cambridge Electricity Policy Research Group and CESifo Munich, and has served as visiting professor at Toulouse School of Economics. His research centers on theoretical and empirical microeconomics, with applications in industrial organization, public policy, energy markets, and climate change. Areas of expertise encompass microeconomics and environmental economics. An award-winning educator, Liski teaches courses from principles of economics and executive education to advanced international doctoral programs and summer schools.

Liski has received the Teacher of the Year award at Aalto University in 2023, the Best Paper Award in 2016 for 'A simple formula for the social cost of carbon' published in the Journal of Environmental Economics and Management (with Inge van den Bijgaart and Reyer Gerlagh), and the Excellence in Refereeing Award from the Journal of the European Economic Association in 2015. Notable publications include forthcoming articles such as 'Catastrophes, delays, and learning' in The Review of Economic Studies (2026, with François Salanié), 'Household-level responses to the European energy crisis' in American Economic Review: Insights (2026, with Lassi Ahlvik, Tuomas Kaariaho, and Iivo Vehviläinen), and 'Redistribution through efficiency: Theory and evidence from three electricity markets' in RAND Journal of Economics (2026, with Iivo Vehviläinen). Earlier works feature 'Consistent climate policies' in Journal of the European Economic Association (2018, with Reyer Gerlagh). He has delivered keynote lectures at scientific conferences, served on boards of foundations and scientific associations, and undertaken editorial duties for the Scandinavian Journal of Economics and Journal of the European Economic Association.
