Dr. Maura Schlairet serves as Professor and Associate Dean for the Undergraduate Program at the Atlanta Campus of Mercer University's Georgia Baptist College of Nursing, a position she has held since joining the faculty in 2016. Previously, she was an associate professor in the College of Nursing and Health Sciences at Valdosta State University. Her academic background includes an EdD in Curriculum and Instruction from Valdosta State University in 2006, an MA in Bioethics and Healthcare Policy from Loyola University Chicago in 2012, an MSN in Nursing from Valdosta State University in 1997, and a BSN in Nursing from Valdosta State University in 1995. She holds certifications as RN and CNL. Schlairet's research focuses on nursing education, including innovative teaching strategies such as the flipped classroom, simulation-based learning, heutagogy, and self-directed learning among undergraduate nursing students. She has also investigated end-of-life nursing care education needs, cancer survivorship programs, bioethics in clinical settings, and the impact of resistance training on breast cancer survivors' quality of life.
Schlairet has authored numerous peer-reviewed publications, including 'Moving toward heutagogical learning: Illuminating undergraduate nursing students' experiences in a flipped classroom' (Nurse Education Today, 2017), 'The flipped classroom: strategies for an undergraduate nursing course' (Nurse Educator, 2014), 'Equivalence testing of traditional and simulated clinical experiences: Undergraduate nursing students’ knowledge acquisition' (Journal of Nursing Education, 2010), 'End-of-life nursing care: Statewide survey of nurses' education needs and effects of education' (Journal of Professional Nursing, 2009), and 'Piloting a Needs Assessment to Guide Development of a Survivorship Program for a Community Cancer Center' (Clinical Journal of Oncology Nursing, 2010). Her work has influenced nursing pedagogy through studies on podcasting efficacy, cognitive load in high-fidelity simulation, and senior NCLEX-RN coaching models. She received the Valdosta State University Faculty Excellence in Scholarship of Teaching and Learning Award in 2014 and a 10-year service award at Mercer University in 2026. Schlairet has presented posters at national conferences, such as the National Consortium of Nursing Academic Progression in Practice, and serves on university committees including the Undergraduate Council and the Healthcare Ethics Consortium Advisory Board.
