About Maureen

Professor Maureen Kelly is a registered General Practitioner and Professor of Primary Care Education in the School of Medicine at University of Galway. As Head of Discipline of General Practice, Lead of Undergraduate General Practice teaching, and Widening Participation Lead for the School of Medicine, she brings twenty-five years of experience in clinical education across undergraduate, postgraduate, and faculty development levels. She served as Associate Programme Director of the Western GP Training Scheme for twenty years, emphasizing professional development for general practitioners and capacity building in academic general practice research. From 2017 to 2022, she was Vice Dean for Civic Engagement in the College of Medicine, Nursing and Health Sciences, leading the establishment of the first multi-professional civic engagement committee and programme. She currently chairs Academic General Practice Ireland (AGPI), representing academics and clinicians in primary care nationwide.

Her academic background includes a PhD from University of Galway (2015), Masters in Medical Education from University of Dundee (2003), MB BCh BAO, DCH, DObs, membership (MICGP) and fellowship (FRCGP) of the Irish College of General Practitioners and Royal College of General Practitioners. Research interests encompass general practice education and training, medical student recruitment and selection, widening participation in healthcare professions education, communication skills training, and civic and community engagement. Notable contributions include serving as Working Group Chair and lead author of the joint AUDGPI/ICGP report "Medical Student to General Practitioner: An urgent call to action" (2023). Key publications include "Impact of telehealth implementation on medical non-consultant hospital doctors training experience" (BMC Medical Education, 2024, with Piggott L. and Piggott S.), "Perspectives on the production, and use, of rapid evidence in decision making during the COVID-19 pandemic: a qualitative study" (BMJ Evidence-Based Medicine, 2023), and numerous articles, conference publications, and commissioned reports. Awards include shortlisting for the Association for Medical Education in Europe (AMEE) PhD of the Year Award (2016), Association for the Study of Medical Education (ASME) Educator Development Group Travelling Fellowship (2011), and Fellowship of the Royal College of General Practitioners (2012). Her leadership in national collaborations and plenary lectures has advanced primary care education in Ireland.
