Mauro Farella is Professor and Chair of Orthodontics, Head of the Postgraduate Programme in Orthodontics (Doctorate in Clinical Dentistry), and Director of the Craniofacial Research programme at the Faculty of Dentistry, University of Otago, New Zealand. A registered specialist in orthodontics in New Zealand, he practices clinical orthodontics exclusively. His academic qualifications include a DDS from the University of Naples, Dottore di Ricerca from the University of Reggio Calabria, Specialist in Orthodontics from Naples, and Specialist in Medical Statistics from Milan. Prior to his appointment at Otago in 2009, he taught at the University of Naples Federico II and the University of Zurich, where he was based at the Centre for Oral Medicine and Maxillofacial Surgery. He has extensive experience as a clinical orthodontist and instructor since 1993.
Farella's research specializations encompass clinical orthodontics, biomechanics, craniofacial growth and imaging, jaw function, oral biology, translational research using animal models, development of wearable devices in dentistry and orthodontics, orofacial muscles, bruxism, and temporomandibular joint research. The Craniofacial Research programme under his direction investigates dentofacial growth, jaw function, malocclusions, orofacial pain, and patient-centered treatments. His international research has been funded by grants totaling over one million Euros, and he has lectured in 22 countries. Notable awards include the Alan Docking Award from the International Association for Dental Research, the Sir John Walsh Award, and the Research Supervisor of the Year Award in 2021. Key publications comprise "A review of the epidemiological evidence on tooth wear" (Berry et al., 2025, New Zealand Dental Journal), "Late facial growth and continuous dentoalveolar eruption: Implications for optimal dental implant placement" (Valente et al., 2025, Periodontology 2000), "Microplastics and nanoplastics in clinical dentistry and orthodontics" (Shariff et al., 2025, Progress in Orthodontics), "The effect of clear aligners with posterior occlusal attachments on daytime masticatory muscle activity" (Hu et al., 2025, American Journal of Orthodontics & Dentofacial Orthopedics), and "Treatment outcomes of Class II subdivision with clear aligners" (Hatami et al., 2025, American Journal of Orthodontics & Dentofacial Orthopedics). He serves as Associate Editor for Orthodontics and Craniofacial Research and the Korean Journal of Orthodontics, and as a member of the Editorial Board for the Journal of Oral Rehabilitation.
