Max Jackson is a Lecturer in the Centre for Aboriginal Studies at Curtin University, operating under the Office of the Provost. He coordinates undergraduate units such as INDS1000 and INDS5001 Introduction to Indigenous Australians, introducing students to key aspects of Indigenous histories, cultures, and contemporary issues. Additionally, Jackson serves as the primary contact for postgraduate cultural study programs, including INDS5005 Exploring Indigenous Australian Knowledges, which offers flexible entry for postgraduate students to engage with Indigenous knowledges on-country, and the Graduate Certificate in Indigenous Australian Cultural Studies. This certificate equips graduates and professionals with comprehensive understanding of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander culture, diversity, history, policies, and community engagement practices.
In 2023, Jackson led the This City Was Once Country Team—comprising Anthony Kickett, Marleigh Zada, and Fred Yasso—to receive the Curtin Excellence and Innovation in Teaching Award in the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Knowledge and Culture category. His scholarly work includes co-authoring the 2022 conference paper 'The Indigenous digital divide: COVID-19 and its impacts on educational delivery to First Nation university students' at CONF-IRM 2022, alongside Arthur M. Wilson III, Mandy Downing, Amma Buckley, and Julie Owen. The paper addresses how the shift to online learning during the pandemic exacerbated challenges for Indigenous students, especially in rural and remote areas, advocating for inclusive digital strategies that respect First Nations people and cultures. Jackson is pursuing a PhD at Curtin University titled 'An Exploration if Australian Policies and Acts are the only Disruptions that Disempower Local Aboriginal Men,' which he presented at the NAIDOC Week 2023 Symposium hosted by the National Drug Research Institute. He has also contributed to events such as the Universal Design for Learning Symposium with 'Reinvigorating Nyungar Boodja' and served on the Academic Services Committee until March 2023. Contactable at max.jackson@curtin.edu.au or +61 8 9266 7444, Jackson supports inquiries on cultural units and programs.
