Associate Professor Md Shahidul Islam serves as the Discipline Lead and Course Coordinator for the Health Management and Public Health (One Health) programs in the School of Health, Faculty of Medicine and Health at the University of New England (UNE) in Armidale, Australia. He obtained his PhD from the School of Health at UNE, an MSc in International Health from Queen Margaret University (Edinburgh, UK), the Royal Tropical Institute (Amsterdam, Netherlands), and the Karolinska Institute (Stockholm, Sweden), as well as Bachelor of Social Sciences (Honours) and Master of Social Sciences degrees from the University of Dhaka, Bangladesh. He also holds a Diploma in Tropical Medicine and Hygiene from the Royal Tropical Institute, Associate Fellow status with the Australasian College of Health Service Management (AFCHSM), and Certified Health Manager (CHM) qualification in Australia. With over 25 years of experience in public health and health management research and teaching across Asia, Europe, and Australia, he has supervised more than 30 higher degree by research students (MPhil/PhD) over the past 20 years. His academic interests center on public health, One Health, health management, eHealth, and mental health within interdisciplinary health sciences.
Associate Professor Islam has authored over 80 peer-reviewed articles and two books in health sciences, including recent works such as Leveraging artificial intelligence for One Health surveillance (2025) and Physical and mental health status of women in disaster-affected coastal areas (2023). He contributes to the field as an Editorial Board Member for BMC Public Health and BMC Health Services Research, Executive Committee member of the Society for Health Administration Programs in Education (SHAPE) Australia, and Council Member of the NSW Branch of ACHSM. His major honors include the Faculty of Medicine and Health Executive Dean's Award for Research Excellence as a mid-career researcher (2024), nomination for the UNE Staff Award for Research Excellence (2025), School Citation for Education Excellence (2021), and Faculty Executive Dean's Commendation for Excellence in Graduate Research Supervision (2025). He teaches courses in health and social care, leadership in healthcare, systems and policy in healthcare, safety and quality in healthcare, epidemiology, and capstone projects, enhancing educational impact in health management.
