Dr Megan Rollo is a Lecturer in Nutrition and Dietetics in the Curtin School of Population Health, Faculty of Health Sciences at Curtin University, where she joined in December 2021. She is an Accredited Practising Dietitian with a PhD in Nutrition and Dietetics, Bachelor of Health Science (Nutrition and Dietetics) Honours, and Bachelor of Applied Science, all obtained from Queensland University of Technology. Previously, she served as a Research Fellow at the University of Newcastle, where she maintains an Honorary Senior Lecturer position in the School of Health Sciences (Nutrition and Dietetics). With over 14 years of experience in nutrition and dietetics, Dr Rollo specializes in technology-assisted approaches to measure dietary intake, deliver behavioural nutrition interventions, and support dietetic practice through eHealth and mHealth applications.
Dr Rollo's academic interests encompass the development, validation, and evaluation of innovative dietary assessment methods, including smartphone image-based dietary records and the VISIDA image-voice system tailored for low- and lower-middle-income countries to facilitate individual-level dietary data collection and analysis. She has authored more than 120 peer-reviewed journal publications, including 'Effectiveness of Digital Health Interventions on Body Weight and Dietary Intake Outcomes Among Culturally and Linguistically Diverse (CALD) and Indigenous Populations: A Systematic Review' (Obesity Reviews, 2026), 'Healthcare Service Delivery Experiences of Australians With Previous Diabetes in Pregnancy: Results From a Cross-Sectional Survey' (Australian Journal of Rural Health, 2026), and 'An Image-Voice Dietary Assessment System for Estimating Individual Nutrient Intakes in Cambodian Women and Children: Relative Validity, Reliability, and Acceptability Study' (JMIR, 2025). Her research has attracted over $6 million in funding from prestigious sources such as the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation ($1.82 million for VISIDA), National Health and Medical Research Council ($1.13 million), and nib Foundation ($500,000). In 2022, she received the inaugural Chester Goodsell Memorial Award for outstanding contributions to the use of technology in evidence-based nutrition analysis for health and wellbeing. Dr Rollo supervises PhD students on topics including speech processing for dietary assessment and nutrition in Cambodia, and serves as a guest editor for special issues on dietary assessment advancements.
