Melanie Philip serves as Clinical Group Leader – Nursing and Nurse Prescriber at the University of Otago Student Health Services in Dunedin. As a Registered Nurse trained in Dunedin, she gained clinical experience working in hospitals in Dunedin and London before joining Student Health Services in 2008. Her professional journey at the university spans over 17 years, during which she has held roles as a practice nurse and community nurse prescriber. Since 2014, Philip has been responsible for managing the screening and vaccination programme for Health Sciences students, ensuring essential health protections for this academic group. Her special interests include travel medicine, vaccinations, and sexual health, reflecting her focus on key areas of student primary care.
In December 2023, it was announced that Melanie Philip would take on her current leadership role starting in the new year, succeeding Katherine Martin who retired after nearly 19 years in the position. This appointment marked the 17th anniversary of Philip's first day at Student Health Services. Leading the nursing team, she oversees the delivery of safe and inclusive primary health care to University of Otago students, encompassing routine appointments, urgent care, telehealth consultations, flu vaccinations, meningitis vaccines, and other immunisations. Philip's dedication supports student wellbeing, enabling focus on academic endeavours within the Division of Health Sciences context.
