Melanie Remy is the Sciences Research Advisor at the University of Otago's Division of Sciences. Appointed to this position in July 2017, she assists academic staff and postgraduate students with identifying research funding opportunities, developing grant applications, and managing research contracts following successful awards. Her portfolio includes the Departments of Botany, Chemistry, Geology, Marine Science, Science Communication, and Zoology, as well as the School of Surveying. In her role within Research and Enterprise, Remy supports the preparation of contestable funding proposals, collaborative applications, and contract negotiations. Previously, as Divisional Librarian for the Sciences, she developed and delivered research support services tailored to staff and students in scientific disciplines.
Remy earned her Master of Arts degree in Library and Information Studies from the University of Wisconsin-Madison in 1999. Since then, she has served as an academic research librarian in both the United States and New Zealand. Her professional expertise encompasses library management, academic librarianship, scholarly communication, bibliometrics, and open access publishing. Notable publications include co-authoring the "University of Otago Open Access Publishing Survey Results" in 2016 and an extended version including Māori ethnicity results in 2017 with Richard White. She also produced the "University of Otago Library Subject Guide Evaluation: User Testing Report" in 2013. Earlier works feature reviews of resources such as WorldWideScience.org (2009), Bentham Open Access Journals (2008), Internet Mental Health (2008), and Wikipedia entries (2002). Remy has presented on library subject guides, participated in Open Access Week events, and delivered seminars on research funding opportunities, such as for the School of Surveying. She attended the Women in Leadership at Otago (WiLO) Programme.
