Meredith Kellahan is a Lecturer in Communication Skills and Interprofessional Practice in the School of Health, Faculty of Medicine and Health, at the University of New England. She holds a Bachelor of Nursing, Bachelor of Psychological Sciences, Master of Mental Health, and Diploma of Counselling. These qualifications form the basis of her professional expertise in clinical nursing, forensic mental health nursing, interprofessional practice, and social science. Registered as both a clinical nurse and a mental health nurse, Kellahan brings hands-on experience to her academic role, focusing on enhancing communication skills essential for health professionals.
Prior to her appointment at the University of New England, Kellahan taught at Charles Darwin University's College of Nursing and Midwifery and at Western Sydney University's School of Social Sciences. Her career also includes significant clinical and advocacy work; she served as an aviation nurse escort for a non-governmental organization, working both onshore and offshore in Immigration Detention Centers and Immigration Transit Centers. Additionally, she has provided critical mental health and clinical nursing services to asylum seekers and refugees in various locations in Australia and overseas. At UNE, she contributes to the delivery of units such as Communication for Health Professionals (HLTH103), Digital Technologies in Health and Social Care (HLTH203), and Digital Technologies in Health and Social Care (HLTH403), where she emphasizes interprofessional collaboration and effective communication in healthcare settings. Kellahan maintains memberships in key professional organizations, including the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA), Australian College of Nursing, Australian Nursing and Midwifery Federation, and CRANAplus. She further engages with the community as a translator for the Australian War Memorial.
