About Michael
Michael Adjemian is a Professor of Agricultural and Applied Economics at the University of Georgia, contributing to the field of Business & Economics through his expertise in agricultural markets and commodity trading. He holds a Ph.D. in Agricultural and Resource Economics from the University of California, Davis (2009) and a B.S. in Finance with honors from the University of Florida (2001). Adjemian's career includes service as Senior Economist on the Council of Economic Advisers (2017-2018), Senior Research Economist at the USDA Economic Research Service (2016-2019), and Research Economist there (2009-2015). He joined UGA as Associate Professor in 2019, advancing to full Professor in 2024, while also consulting for the Commodity Futures Trading Commission since 2019.
His research specializations encompass agricultural commodity markets, futures markets, price discovery, USDA forecasts, market convergence, volatility, uncertainty, trade policies, and supply chain disruptions. Notable publications include "Factors Affecting Recent Food Price Inflation in the United States" (Adjemian et al., 2023, Applied Economic Perspectives and Policy), "Information Rigidities in USDA Crop Production Forecasts" (Goyal and Adjemian, 2023, American Journal of Agricultural Economics), "Hedging Performance and Its Relationship to Futures Market Convergence" (Goswami et al., 2024, Journal of Commodity Markets), and "Decomposing USDA Ending Stocks Forecast Errors" (Goyal and Adjemian, 2023, Journal of Agricultural and Resource Economics). Adjemian has earned prestigious awards such as the John J. Jack Barriger Research Award (2022), NH Investments and Securities Best Paper Award (2021), John E. Lee Award (2019), American Association of Wine Economists Award of Merit (2016), and Agricultural & Applied Economics Association Quality of Communication Award (2014). He mentors graduate students, with several advisees receiving top dissertation and paper awards.
Adjemian influences the field as Associate Editor of the American Journal of Agricultural Economics (2020-present), Board Member of the Council on Food, Agricultural, and Resource Economics (2021-present), and through invited lectures at institutions like the European Congress of Agricultural Economics, Federal Reserve Bank of Kansas City, and USDA Agricultural Outlook Forum on topics including food price inflation, crop insurance, and ocean freight impacts on agri-food markets.
