Michael Johnson is Professor of Physics and Provost Emeritus at the University of Central Florida (UCF). He joined UCF in 1990 as an assistant professor in the Department of Physics after postdoctoral research positions at the University of Kentucky and Indiana University. He holds a Ph.D. in physics and a bachelor’s degree in applied mathematics from the University of Virginia.
Johnson’s research focuses on theoretical condensed matter physics. His work has investigated integrable one-dimensional quantum systems, nonlinear optical properties of solids, fractional statistics, pattern formation in complex fluids, nonequilibrium high-current transport in nanodevices, quantum statistical mechanics of integrable systems, and electronic properties of highly correlated and nanoscale systems such as quantum dots in the fractional quantum Hall regime. Johnson has had a distinguished administrative career at UCF, serving as Associate Dean in the College of Sciences, Senior Advisor to the Provost, Dean of the College of Sciences appointed in 2011 following a national search, Interim Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs, and Provost and Executive Vice President for Academic Affairs. As Dean, he oversaw education, research, and service in natural sciences including physics, social and behavioral sciences, and communication. As provost, he directs academic programs across 13 colleges serving more than 68,000 students and over 3,000 faculty, manages multiple campuses, research centers, institutes, and the academic budget. He chaired dean and provost searches and served on the University Budget Committee, Budget Realignment Committee, and IT Governance Committee.
