Dr. Michael Ormsbee is the Margaret A. Sitton Endowed Professor and Professor of Nutrition and Integrative Physiology at Florida State University in the Anne Spencer Daves College of Education, Health, and Human Sciences. He serves as Graduate Program Director in Health, Nutrition, and Food Sciences and Executive Director of the Institute of Sports Sciences and Medicine. Ormsbee earned his B.S. in Exercise Science and Business from Skidmore College in 2002, M.S. in Health, Physical Education, and Recreation with emphasis in Exercise Physiology and Sports Nutrition from South Dakota State University in 2005, and Ph.D. in Bioenergetics from an interdisciplinary program in Exercise Science, Physiology, and Nutrient Biochemistry at East Carolina University in 2008. After completing postdoctoral training as a Visiting Professor at Skidmore College from 2008 to 2010, he joined the FSU faculty in 2010. He also holds an Honorary Research Fellow position at the University of KwaZulu-Natal in Durban, South Africa.
Ormsbee's research examines the interaction of exercise training, nutrition, and supplementation to improve metabolism, body composition, human performance, and health in athletic and clinical populations. His specific interests include nighttime pre-sleep feeding strategies to optimize recovery and metabolism, macronutrient ingestion effects on fat metabolism and performance with emphasis on protein and modified carbohydrates, sports nutrition and dietary supplements, hormonal influences on energy metabolism and body composition, and physiological impacts of ultra-endurance exercise. He regularly publishes in top exercise and sports nutrition journals, including the paper 'Osteosarcopenic obesity: the role of bone, muscle, and fat on health throughout the life cycle' (2014). Ormsbee has earned numerous honors, such as induction as a Fellow of the National Academy of Kinesiology (Class of 2024), Fellow of the American College of Sports Medicine, Fellow of the International Society of Sports Nutrition, 2020 NSCA Sport Scientist of the Year, 2020 FSU Distinguished Teacher of the Year, 2018 FSU Graduate Student Mentor of the Year, 2017 NSCA Nutrition Researcher of the Year, 2014 FSU Undergraduate Teacher of the Year, 2013 FSU Transformation Through Teaching Award, and 2015 FSU Guardian of the Flame Award. A certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist Distinguished (CSCS*D), he lectures for The Great Courses, co-led an NIH grant exploring resistance training and type 2 diabetes, and was selected for the 2026 Digital Science Communication Fellowship.
