Michael Proulx is a Professor of History in the Department of History, Anthropology, and Philosophy at the University of North Georgia. He earned his Ph.D. in Ancient History from the University of California, Santa Barbara in 2007. His professional career began as Assistant Professor at City University of New York-Queensborough from 2006 to 2008, followed by Assistant Professor at North Georgia College & State University from 2008 to 2013, and subsequent promotions to Associate Professor in 2013 and Professor at the University of North Georgia. Proulx specializes in Roman history, particularly the emergence of new forms of authority in the late empire, with additional expertise in ancient Greek history, late antiquity, and medieval Europe. His research interests extend to peace history, as demonstrated through collaborative publications on peace pedagogy and European peace efforts from 1500 to 1914.
Proulx's scholarly output includes several significant publications. With Renee Bricker, he co-authored “The Search for Peace in Europe, 1500-1914” in the Oxford Handbook of Peace History (Oxford University Press, 2022) and “Integrating Peace History in the U.S. History Survey Course: Challenging Identity from the Outside In” in The Journal of American History (2019). Other co-authored works feature “A Peace Pedagogy from the Borderlines” with Bricker, Donna Gessell, and Yi Deng in the Routledge Handbook of Pacifism and Nonviolence (2018). Solo and collaborative pieces include “Patres Orphanorum: Ambrose of Milan and the Construction of the Role of the Bishop” in The Rhetoric of Power in Late Antiquity (2010) and “In the Shadow of Anthony: History and Hagiography in the Works of Sulpicius Severus and Paulinus of Milan” in Studia Patristica 39 (2006). He teaches courses such as World History I, Ancient Greece, Roman Republic, Medieval Europe, and seminars on Greece and Rome at War, Violence and Society in the Pre-Modern Mediterranean World, and Pagans & Christians. Proulx advises Phi Alpha Theta, holds memberships in the North American Patristics Society and American Historical Association, serves on the Gender Studies Council, and is President of the Southeast World History Association (2024-2025).
