Dr habil. Michael Volgger, BSc, Mag., is Professor in the School of Management and Marketing, Faculty of Business and Law at Curtin University, serving as Discipline Lead for Tourism, Hospitality, and Events and Co-Director of the Tourism Research Cluster. He earned his BSc, Magister, doctorate, and habilitation (Dr. habil.) in Economics and Business Administration from the Catholic University of Eichstätt-Ingolstadt, Germany. Prior to joining Curtin University in 2017, he worked as a Researcher and Senior Research Fellow at the Institute for Regional Development, Eurac Research, in Bolzano, Italy, from 2010 to 2016. At Curtin, his career advanced from Senior Lecturer to Associate Professor from 2021 to 2023, and to full Professor since 2024. He has held additional roles including Visiting Professorship at the Catholic University of Eichstätt-Ingolstadt in 2021 and Visiting Research Fellow at Wakayama University's Center for Tourism Research from 2019 to 2023. Professor Volgger has extensive teaching experience at undergraduate, postgraduate, and executive levels across Australia, Germany, and Switzerland, and supervises theses at various levels.
Professor Volgger's research focuses on tourism destination governance and management, innovation and social change in tourism, product development, regional development, and consumer behaviour, with specific interests in responsible consumer behaviour, tourism atmospheres, and supply-side governance. His scholarship has garnered over 3,500 citations with an h-index of 27 according to Google Scholar. Notable publications include 'Recovery of domestic tourism during the COVID-19 pandemic: An experimental comparison of interventions' (Journal of Hospitality and Tourism Management, 2021), 'The evolution of "Airbnb-tourism": Demand-side dynamics in the sharing economy' (Annals of Tourism Research, 2019), 'Quo vadis research on spatial atmospheres?' (2025), and editorship of 'Tribes in Tourism: Contemporary perspectives on special-interest tourism consumption' (Springer, 2021). He contributes editorially as Senior Editor of Tourism Geographies, Co-Editor of the Advances in Culture, Tourism and Hospitality Research book series, and Associate Editor of Frontiers in Sustainable Tourism. His influence extends through international guest lectures and involvement in tourism research initiatives.
