About Michele

Michele Barry, MD, FACP, FASTMH, is the Drs. Ben & A. Jess Shenson Professor of Medicine and Tropical Diseases at Stanford University School of Medicine, serving as Senior Associate Dean for Global Health and Director of the Center for Innovation in Global Health since 2009. She is also Professor, by courtesy, of Health Policy, Senior Fellow at the Stanford Woods Institute for the Environment, Senior Fellow at the Freeman Spogli Institute for International Studies, and Faculty Affiliate at the Institute for Human-Centered Artificial Intelligence. Her research specializations include tropical medicine, emerging infectious diseases, planetary health, climate change and health inequities, global health security, ethics in global health training, and strategies to empower women leaders in global health. Barry earned her A.B. magna cum laude from Bryn Mawr College in 1974, M.D. from Albert Einstein College of Medicine in 1977, and Diploma in Tropical Medicine from Walter Reed Hospital in 1980. She completed her internship, residency, chief residency in internal medicine at Yale-New Haven Hospital from 1977 to 1981, and a fellowship in rheumatology from 1981 to 1983.

Prior to Stanford, Barry had a 28-year career at Yale School of Medicine, advancing from Assistant Professor of Medicine (1981-1986) to Associate Professor (1986-1994) and Professor of Medicine and Global Health (1994-2009). There, she directed the Southeast Asian Refugee Clinic, International Health Program, and International Health Office, and co-directed the Yale/Stanford Johnson & Johnson Global Physician Scholars Program. Major honors include presidency of the American Society of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene (2001-2002), election to the National Academy of Medicine (2002), Ben Kean Medal (2010), Elizabeth Blackwell Award (2017), Marty Wolfe Medal for Mentorship (2022), and Distinguished Leadership Award from the Consortium of Universities for Global Health (2023). She chaired the Consortium's Board (2020-2022) and served on the National Academy of Medicine's Board of Global Health (2019-2024). Key publications encompass "Environmental Determinants of Health—Time to Redefine the Social History?" (JAMA, 2024), "Climate change and inequality" (Pediatric Research, 2024), "A Call to Action for Gender Equity in Climate Leadership" (Am J Trop Med Hyg, 2023), "The Tail End of Guinea Worm—Global Eradication without a Drug or Vaccine" (NEJM, 2007), and "Disease without borders: globalization's challenge to the American Society of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene" (Am J Trop Med Hyg, 2003). Her leadership has advanced global health education, policy advocacy, and responses to environmental health threats.
